New York Peacemakers - Cowboy Mounted Shooters

What is Cowboy Mounted Shooting?

Cowboy Mounted Shooting - the name says it all.  While mounted on a horse, a cowboy (or cowgirl) rides through an arena in which barrels and balloons have been arranged in a wide variety of patterns.  Riders, scored on their accuracy and timing, shoot the balloons using pistols or rifles half-loaded with black powder cartridges ("blanks").  The first half of the course, consisting of five balloons, tests a rider's ability to stop, turn, change leads and increase speed, all while maintaining accuracy. The second half, known as the "run down", tests a rider's skill at shooting targets while maintaining speed.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting is a lot of fun!  It is fun for individuals who ride and train horses, for spectators, for adults and children, and it's even fun for the well-prepared horse!

About the New York Chapter of CMSA

The New York Chapter of the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association, known as the NY Peacemakers, has been established by Dan McCarthy and Kimberly Wickham.  As President and Vice President, respectively, Dan and Kim have formulated their own particular philosophy of natural horsemanship based on years of experience riding, training and handling horses.  Inspired by   Leslie Desmond (http://www.lesliedesmond.com ), this method is more akin to coaching than training.  They provide a low-stress learning environment that accommodates a horse's behavior, instincts and personality.  Their effective communication strategies encourage growth and development of both horse and rider.  This establishes a strong, positive relationship that allows each to achieve to fullest potential.  Dan and Kim strongly encourage members of the New York Peacemakers, and anyone involved with horses, to learn about natural horsemanship and its benefits.
